8/15/2025 West Fork of Bitterroot Fishing Report

The West Fork has been a solid option for anglers this week, especially below Painted Rocks Reservoir. With cooler releases, water temps are holding lower than the mainstem, and the trout are making the most of it. The river is clear, steady, and offering reliable dry-fly action through the morning hours.

What We’re Seeing: The early bite has been driven by caddis and PMDs, with fish rising well in riffles and tailouts. Midday slows a bit, but dry-dropper rigs with beadhead nymphs continue to produce. If you’re looking for bigger fish, swinging or stripping streamers through deeper runs and undercut banks will move a few bruisers.

Best Flies Right Now:

  • Smaller Chubbies (#14 in purple or royal)

  • Parachute Adams & Purple Haze (#14–16)

  • Elk Hair Caddis (#14–16, tan/olive)

  • Beadhead Prince Nymphs & Tunghead PTs

  • Double Bunny & Sparkle Minnow streamers

Guide Tips: This stretch is perfect for a dry-dropper rig—run 18–24” of tippet off your Chubby or Adams with a jig nymph below. Stay tight to structure—logjams, shaded banks, and undercut edges are where the fish slide during midday heat.

Bottom Line: The West Fork is a refreshing choice during August. Cooler flows, steady bug activity, and great opportunities for both dry-fly purists and streamer junkies.
