Don McGourty - Fly Fishing Guide

I’ve lived in the Bitterroot Valley my entire life with over three decades of experience navigating the waters of Montana, Idaho, and Alaska. My career has given me the privilege of guiding on some of the region's most famous rivers, including the Bitterroot, Rock Creek, Blackfoot, and Clark Fork. With over 100 days on the water every year, I’ve developed a deep understanding of these waters and the unique experiences they offer.

What drives me most is the opportunity to connect with clients from all walks of life—people I probably wouldn’t have crossed paths with outside of the world of fishing. It’s always rewarding to help people not only enjoy the beauty of nature but also discover the quiet thrill that comes with mastering a skill like fly fishing. Sharing my knowledge and experience with guests—whether it’s teaching them about the history of a river or helping them land their first big catch—is something that keeps me passionate about my work.

One of my favorite times of the year is early July, when the Golden Stone hatch fills the air, bringing trout up to the waters surface in a spectacular display. There’s something about that season that feels like magic on the river. When I’m not on the water, you can usually find me enjoying a meal at the Bitterroot Brewery, a local gem in the Bitterroot Valley that’s a favorite among both locals and visitors.

Every day spent guiding on Montana's rivers is a chance to learn something new, explore hidden gems, and share that knowledge with the people who join me on the water. I can’t imagine a more fulfilling career.
