3/20/2026 Bitterroot River Fishing Report

Spring is starting to take hold here in the Bitterroot River, and we’re seeing the first real signs of life both on the water and in the bugs. Flows are gradually climbing with warmer daytime temps, but mornings are still cool, keeping conditions fishable throughout most of the day.

Current Conditions

  • Flows: Rising but still manageable

  • Water Clarity: Good to slightly off-color in the afternoons

  • Water Temps: Cold mornings, warming into the upper 30s/low 40s

Hatches & Bugs

We’re right on the doorstep of one of the best times of year—the Skwala stonefly hatch. Fish are starting to look up, especially on warmer afternoons.

What we’re seeing:

  • Skwala stoneflies (early activity)

  • Blue Winged Olives (BWO)

  • Midges

Dry fly opportunities are picking up, particularly between 1 PM and 4 PM when temps peak.

What’s Working

Dry Flies:

  • Skwala patterns (bullet heads, foam dries)

  • BWO dries (Parachute Adams, Comparaduns)

Nymphs:

  • Pat’s Rubber Legs (black/coffee)

  • Pheasant Tails

  • TJ Hooker

  • Zebra Midges

  • San Juan Worms

Focus on slower seams, inside bends, and soft water off the main current—fish are still holding in winter lies but starting to slide into feeding lanes.

Streamer Fishing

Streamer fishing has been solid, especially on cloudy days. This is a great time to move bigger fish.

  • Black/olive streamers

  • Sculpzilla-style patterns

  • Slow strips and tight to the bank

Tips for Success

  • Fish slow and deep in the mornings

  • Transition to dries in the afternoon

  • Target softer water—fish aren’t fully spread out yet

  • Keep an eye out for Skwalas crawling on the streambanks

Guided Trips

This is one of our favorite times to be on the water. The combination of aggressive fish and the chance to throw big dry flies makes for an unforgettable day. If you’re looking to dial in Skwala fishing, now’s the time to book a trip.
