Update: June 7, 2025
Location: Blackfoot River – Western Montana
As we roll into the second week of June, the Blackfoot River is shaping up beautifully. Flows near Bonner are currently around 1850 CFS and steadily dropping, offering improving water clarity and some excellent opportunities for both float and wade anglers.
🔥 Hatch Update
We’re right in the thick of salmonfly season, and it’s on fire. The big bugs are working their way up the river, with the lower stretches already seeing plenty of adult activity. Expect fish to key in on salmonflies tight to banks, under willows, and along any cutbanks with structure.
We’re also seeing golden stones, yellow sallies, and strong evening caddis hatches, making this a perfect time to throw dries all day and into the twilight hours.
🎯 Flies That Are Working
Dry Flies:
-
Chubby Chernobyl (orange, purple, tan)
-
True Salmonfly
-
Rogue Stone
-
Cat Puke
-
Norm Woods Special
Nymphs & Droppers:
-
Pat’s Rubberlegs
-
Zirdle Bugs (tan, olive)
-
20-Incher Stone
-
DB Stone
-
Duracell Jig
Start your day with a dry-dropper or deep nymph rig while the water is still chilly. By mid-morning, once the sun hits the water and the bugs start flying, switch to a big foam dry and focus on likely holding water. Evenings have been a blast with rising fish chasing caddis.
💡 Pro Guide Tip
Don’t overlook slower water just off the main current. Those bigger trout are sipping adult stones in the softer pockets. A stealthy approach and first cast count right now. Stick with a longer leader and float close to structure for the best shots.
☀️ Weather & Outlook
We’ve got hot and sunny days ahead, with temps climbing into the 90s by Monday. These warm conditions will only push the hatch further upstream. It’s game on for salmonfly fishing, so if you’ve been waiting to hit the Blackfoot—this is the week.
