June 7th Bitterroot Fishing Report

Bitterroot River Fishing Report
Updated: June 7, 2025

The Bitterroot River is in full transition from spring runoff to early summer conditions. Flows are steadily dropping and clearing, providing improving opportunities for anglers across the entire system. With cooler overnight temps and a good snowpack, expect the river to remain high but fishable in the coming days—especially in the upper stretches and side channels.

Current Streamflows:

  • Darby (Upper Bitterroot): ~1630 CFS

  • Bell Crossing (Mid-river): ~3300 CFS

  • Missoula (Lower River): ~4,290 CFS

Note: Flows are still above average for this time of year—wading is not recommended. Focus on float fishing and working the soft edges, seams, and flooded willows.

Hatches & Fly Recommendations:
We’re entering prime time for big dry flies. Golden Stones are popping on the lower river, and salmonflies are showing up in the canyon stretches. You’ll also see steady hatches of PMDs, Green Drakes, and Caddis, especially on overcast afternoons and warm evenings.

Top Dry Flies:

  • Rogue Golden Stone #8–10

  • Plan B Golden #10

  • Salmonfly Chubby #6–8

  • Sparkle Dun PMD #16

  • Parachute Green Drake #12

  • X-Caddis Tan #16

Effective Nymphs & Droppers:

  • Pat’s Rubber Legs (Black/Brown) #8

  • CDC Pheasant Tail #14–16

  • Tungsten Split Case PMD #16

  • Frenchie #16

  • San Juan Worms (in colored water)

Guide’s Tip:
The name of the game right now is covering water and hitting the soft stuff. Fish are holding tight to structure and out of the main current. Use attractor dries tight to the bank and be ready for explosive eats—especially in the afternoon heat. If you're floating, take advantage of the side channels and slower seams.

Looking Ahead:
With cooler temps forecasted for next week, we expect flows to hold steady or even drop slightly, opening up more dry fly opportunities across the Bitterroot system. The middle and upper river will come into prime shape soon, just in time for the peak of the Golden Stone hatch.
